Negotiating narrative and form
The paintings from 2020 reflect a period of questioning in my practice. As viewers became increasingly engaged with the narrative and symbolic aspects of the work, I found myself negotiating the balance between a formally driven approach to composition and the growing expectation of narrative meaning.
This tension created a sense of uncertainty within some of the paintings. Looking back, however, this moment of instability proved important. It allowed me to reconsider the relationship between form and meaning ultimately reinforcing my commitment to allowing the structure of the painting itself to remain the primary source from which imagery and interpretation emerge.
